Phantom Blade Zero Difficulty Modes Explained: 66 Days and New Game Plus

Compare Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days mode, including the 66-death limit and what happens when you die.

Soul has just 66 days to live in Phantom Blade Zero's story. That sounds like a time limit, but S-GAME has confirmed an important distinction: your first playthrough is not restricted by a 66-day countdown.

A separate challenge mode makes the number meaningful during gameplay. Here's how the available difficulty options compare.

1. Wayfarer: the story-focused option

Wayfarer is designed for players who want to experience the story, setting and combat with less pressure. S-GAME positions it as the approachable choice for people who are more interested in enjoying their journey through the Wulin.

That does not mean the game stops using parries, dodges or unique weapons. It means the difficulty is intended to be more welcoming while players learn these systems.

If you enjoy exploration or want time to experiment with several weapons, Wayfarer may be the sensible first choice.

2. Pathbreaker: the preview's default setting

An October hands-on report describes Pathbreaker as the default difficulty in the build journalists played.

It offers a useful middle ground for players who want challenging encounters without choosing S-GAME's more adaptive high-difficulty option immediately.

The developer has not published a full comparison of enemy health, damage or recovery frames between Pathbreaker and Wayfarer. Those numbers shouldn't be assumed.

3. Hellwalker: enemies adapt to your habits

Hellwalker is described by S-GAME as a more advanced challenge featuring adaptive enemy intelligence. According to the developer, opponents can respond to your habits rather than relying exclusively on a fixed sequence of attacks.

This is a more interesting difference than simply giving bosses larger health bars. If the system works as described in the final build, players may need to vary their offence and defence rather than repeat one safe pattern.

Exactly how individual bosses adapt will need to be documented after launch.

4. Sixty-Six Days: 66 deaths in New Game Plus

The most distinctive mode is Sixty-Six Days. S-GAME director Soulframe Liang explained during an October 8 developer Q&A that the mode unlocks in New Game Plus.

It uses a Hellwalker-level challenge and limits players to 66 deaths. In other words, the countdown is expressed through the number of times Soul can die, not a requirement to finish the game in 66 real-world days.

Liang also said players can take their acquired equipment and level progression into this challenge. The exact implementation of the mode's run-ending behaviour should be checked in the released game, but the 66-death rule itself was stated directly by the developer.

5. Does the story force you to rush?

No, not during the initial playthrough. The developer confirmed that the 66-day premise serves the narrative on your first run.

That matters because Phantom Blade Zero encourages backtracking, optional bosses, side quests and hidden-area discovery. Players should not confuse Soul's fictional deadline with a timer that makes those activities impossible.

6. What happens when you die?

An October 9 hands-on preview reports that players did not lose resources on death in the early build. It also describes checkpoint bells near bosses, making repeated attempts less frustrating.

During one fight with The Hunt, the previewer defeated the first phase, died in the second phase, and could resume from that second phase after returning to the checkpoint.

This is a reported behaviour for that preview encounter, not evidence that every multi-phase boss works the same way. Boss-by-boss checkpoint rules belong in the boss wiki after release.

7. Which difficulty should you choose?

For a first playthrough, choose based on what you want from the game:

  • Wayfarer: prioritise story and learning mechanics.
  • Pathbreaker: choose the default-style challenge described in previews.
  • Hellwalker: seek smarter, more demanding opponents.
  • Sixty-Six Days: return in New Game Plus for a limited-death challenge.

That recommendation is based on each mode's intended audience, not a ranking from a completed retail playthrough. The difficulty options are among the best-documented mechanics to write about before release.
